Permanent Makeup Eligibility & Appointment Safety

Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing, and not everyone is a suitable candidate on every date. This page helps identify health conditions, medications, skin treatments, and recent procedures that may require a waiting period, medical clearance, or postponement.

All clients must complete a consultation and health-history review before receiving permanent makeup. Please disclose relevant medical conditions, medications, allergies, previous permanent makeup, and recent cosmetic treatments honestly so we can make the safest decision.

Important: Never stop or change a prescribed medication simply to qualify for permanent makeup. Any medication changes must be discussed with the healthcare professional who prescribed them.

What to Expect From the Process

Permanent makeup commonly requires more than one session. After the initial procedure has fully healed, a perfecting session may be scheduled—typically between six and twelve weeks—to evaluate pigment retention and refine the result.

Fresh permanent makeup appears darker, sharper, and more intense than the healed result. The color and edges soften as the skin heals, so the appearance immediately after your appointment is not the final result.

Before Your Appointment

  • Complete all consultation and health-history forms honestly.

  • Tell us about medical conditions, allergies, prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, supplements, and previous permanent makeup

  • Do not stop or change a prescribed medication unless instructed by the healthcare professional who prescribed it.

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the procedure.

  • Follow the artist’s instructions regarding caffeine and strenuous exercise on the appointment day.

  • Arrive healthy and notify us before your appointment if you develop a fever, infection, active skin irritation, or feel unwell.

  • You may wear your usual brow makeup so we can understand how you normally shape and fill your brows, unless instructed otherwise.

  • Topical anesthetic products may contain ingredients such as lidocaine or epinephrine. Inform us about any known allergies or previous reactions.

  • Plan for temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, and darker-looking pigment immediately after the procedure. Avoid scheduling an important social event for the same day.

When You May Need to Wait

Some medications, skin conditions, cosmetic treatments, and recent procedures can interfere with healing or pigment retention. These are general studio minimums; your circumstances may require a longer wait or medical clearance.

  • Active skin problems: Wait until sunburn, rash, irritation, open wounds, acne lesions, infection, eczema, or psoriasis in the treatment area have fully healed.

  • Facial injectables: Allow at least two weeks between facial injections near the treatment area and your permanent makeup appointment.

  • Chemical peels, laser treatments, or microneedling: Allow at least four weeks and ensure the skin is fully healed.

  • Removal of previous permanent makeup: Allow at least eight weeks after a laser-removal session and wait until the skin is completely healed.

  • Full-dose isotretinoin/Accutane: Contact us before booking if you have used it within the previous twelve months. Medical clearance may be required.

  • Prescription retinoids, topical acne medications, or strong exfoliating acids: Contact us before changing your routine. Do not stop a prescription product without speaking to the prescribing healthcare professional.

  • Brow tinting: Complete it at least two weeks before a brow procedure.

  • Waxing: Complete it at least 48 hours beforehand.

  • Electrolysis: Complete it at least five days beforehand.

  • Recent illness, vaccination, or surgery: Contact us before your appointment so we can determine whether rescheduling is appropriate.

  • Blood-thinning medications or supplements, including fish oil: Disclose them during your consultation. Do not stop or change them without guidance from the healthcare professional overseeing your care.(1/3)

When in doubt, ask before booking. It is better to postpone safely than to risk poor healing or an avoidable complication.

When We Cannot Perform Permanent Makeup

For safety, we cannot perform a procedure when a client:

  • Is under 18 years old

  • Is pregnant or nursing

  • Has a fever, active infection, contagious illness, or feels unwell

  • Has an open wound, active rash, infection, or uncontrolled skin condition in the treatment area

  • Arrives under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs

  • Is currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation, or has completed treatment within the previous twelve months, without required medical clearance and studio approval

  • Has a health condition that may significantly impair healing and has not received requested medical clearance

  • Has an active compulsive skin- or hair-picking condition affecting the treatment area

  • Cannot follow the required preparation and aftercare instructions

  • Expects perfect symmetry, permanent results without maintenance, or another outcome that cannot be achieved realistically

    Permanent makeup is a low-maintenance service, not a no-maintenance service. Results, fading, symmetry, and pigment retention vary from person to person.

When Medical Clearance May Be Required

We may request written clearance from your healthcare professional if you have a history of or are currently being treated for:

  • Diabetes or another condition that affects healing

  • Autoimmune disease or immune suppression

  • High or low blood pressure

  • Heart disease or other significant cardiovascular conditions

  • Seizure disorders or epilepsy

  • Bleeding disorders or use of prescription blood-thinning medication

  • Cancer treatment, recent remission, or recent surgery

  • Organ transplantation

  • Joint replacement or a condition requiring antibiotics before certain procedures

  • Hypertrophic or keloid scarring

  • Eye disease, glaucoma, Graves’ disease, or blepharitis when requesting eyeliner or lash enhancement

  • Cold sores, fever blisters, or shingles when requesting treatment near an affected area

  • Another condition your artist believes may affect procedure safety or healing

    Medical clearance does not automatically guarantee eligibility. The final decision is based on your health history, the requested service, the treatment area, studio policy, and whether the procedure can be performed responsibly.

Before You Book

  • A consultation and completed health-history form are required.

  • Previous permanent makeup must be disclosed. Clear, makeup-free photographs may be requested before scheduling.

  • Ask eligibility questions before paying a booking fee.

  • Read the cancellation, rescheduling, and booking-fee policies before submitting payment.

  • Withholding relevant health information may require the appointment to be postponed or cancelled.
